DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Transfer to volcanoes and mount karisimbi hike
Depending on your location in Kigali city, you will be met by your tour guide/driver as early as 5 am to set off to Volcanoes National park-home to the remaining mountain gorillas in the world, connect directly to the park headquarters for a briefing about the activity as early as 7am, you will then be allocated the ranger guides and you head for the hike. Karisimbi volcano is the highest of the 8 mount peaks of Virunga conservation region. The hike to the summit offers spectacular and magnificent views of different volcanoes including Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes. The hike is strenuous and challenging so you need to be physically fit to do this hike. This is a 6 hours hike with great views different bird species and primates. On reaching at an altitude of about 3700m, you will stop at the first camping site where you will spend a night.
Day 2: Reach the summit, descend and ibyi’wacu cultural village
After early morning cup of coffee, embark on an hour’s hike to the summit. At this level the hike is very steep going through trials of thick jungles surrounded by stunning scenery. On reaching at the summit, enjoy amazing views of the surrounding areas like mount Muhabura. After enjoying your time at the summit descent to the starting point where you will meet your driver readily waiting to receive you and connect for late lunch. Important to note about the Hike;
Mount karisimbi is at a higher altitude, it’s always very mild and misty and the temperature is always very low sometimes going to a negative degrees therefore carry some heavy clothes for warmth. It is is also important to note that it can sunny on some days, but even during the sunny days, expect some rain because of the country being tropical therefore don’t forget to carry rain gears and warm clothes. For the coldness, it’s always cold up there!
Day 3: Gorilla trekking in Rwanda
After an early morning breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up from your hotel. our guide will meet you after having your breakfast and your lunches packed and he will take you to Kinigi Headquarters where you are expected to be given a brief before starting the gorilla trek. This brief is done at 7am. You are given guidelines during this brief before you are allowed to start the trek. This gorilla trek can take to about 2 hours- 7 hours depending in the species which you will get to spend an hour with them observing a number of their rewarding features including how they go about their daily activities from watching the leaders of the group, the silverbacks who have all the mating rights with all the females of the group.
Day 4 golden monkey trekking and transfer back
After an early morning breakfast at your hotel, you will head to the park headquarters to participate in the briefing session for golden monkey trekking. After the session, you will participate in the golden monkey trekking which will lead you to the Virunga mountains in Rwanda that you will hike to access the habituated golden monkey troops. You will get to observe how they go about their daily activities in the wild. The golden monkeys van be accessed when you hike the Virunga mountains in Rwanda which will lead you to the habituated gorilla families watching how they co-exist with one another, the environment and many other rewarding features. After the safari experience, you will head back to Kigali city where you will be dropped off at a location of your choice and the end of your 4 days Volcanoes national park safari.
